What is Unity?

Unity is a worldwide Christian organization over one hundred years old. Because of similarity in names, Unity has on occasion been confused with other organizations. However there is no connection between Unity and Unitarianism or the Unification Church.

Unity is an extremely positive approach to life, seeking to accept the good in people and all of life. God is seen as having many attributes, but most important that God is LOVE. Unity stresses that God is not a physical man in the sky, for this limits Him. God is Spirit, everywhere present, the one and only Spirit behind, in and through all things, visible and invisible.

Unity denies the existence of any power or presence opposed to God. It sees that there are evil appearances and suffering in the world, but ascribes these to man's ignorance and erroneous use of God's laws of life.

Unity proclaims the divinity of Jesus, but goes further and assures that you, too, are a child of God and therefore divine in nature. Jesus expressed His divine potential and sought to show us how to express ours as well. Salvation is then the expanding understanding of one's innate divinity and perfectibility through living the life demonstrated by Jesus.

Unity explains the mind as your connecting link with God or Divine Mind and shows how the action of your mind affects your body and circumstances. Much emphasis is placed on the effective power that every thought, feeling, word and act has upon your life.

Prayer is not seen as a technique for changing God, but for expanding and transforming your mind, and thus changing you.

Unity seeks to relate religion to daily needs, affirming that for every need there is God's perfect answer. Its main textbook is the Bible and it relates its lessons to your life and everyday experiences.

UNITY does break from tradition some in that it has no creedal requirements, dogma, ritual or ecclesiastical garb. Unity chooses to believe that there is good in every religion. Different religions are like spokes on a wheel with the hub being God. They may be set apart by a variance of beliefs and approaches, but they are all seeking the one God as the hub of all life. Consequently, Unity does not deny anyone the right to have their own beliefs.

Unity sees worship as serving God by uplifting and glorifying God's spirit in man, in positive, joyous ways. It seeks not to emphasize one's sins of the past, but instead gives attention to the good that exists in every person and what can be done with the now to transform one's self and his life.

Its main concern is not so much with a "future life" but with teaching people how to live fully in the present, seeing the good in all things. Unity also believes in eternal life and views the present moment as part of eternal life.

Unity does not impose any financial burdens or pressure on its adherents. It believes the desire for giving should be initiated from within the giver to reap the joys of sharing. Consequently, all support is by freewill offerings.

Unity is non-denominational and welcomes in dignity and love, people of all races, colors, religious, social background and economic levels.

In summation, Unity emphasizes the divine potential within every child of God and teaches that through a practical understanding and application of what Jesus taught, every person can realize and express his or her divine potential for a happier, fuller and more successful life.

About Us

A Three-Point summary of Christ Unity Oceanside's belief system:

  1. We believe in God, the Good omnipotent, the only Presence and Power everywhere. We believe that every person is a child of God, created in the image and after the likeness of our Father-Mother God. Therefore, we believe that we are all co-creators with God, endowed with free will and spiritual dominion, and that God indwelling is our instant, constant, and abundant Source of all good.

  2. We believe in the creative power of thoughts and words, whether spoken or silent. We believe that thoughts held in mind reproduce after their kind. Therefore, we believe in the power of prayer to illumine, heal, prosper, and bless, unlimited by time or space, and so, of course, the Golden Rule is our standard of life.

  3. We believe in the Christ, the Son of God, the perfect Word or Idea of God, abiding in each person as potential perfection. We believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God made manifest in Jesus of Nazareth. We are "joint heirs with Christ"--working together and following the Jesus Christ teachings--the universal Truth in every religion--according to our highest understanding, and we continue to grow and unfold as we follow Jesus Christ, the Head of this Church.

WHAT WE TEACH

(Basic principles upon which all classes are based. Every book and every class further expresses these principles.)

  • The Omnipresence of God
    Who and what God is.

Everything that exists, or ever will exist is pressed out of the body of God (God- Substance) in different forms of manifestation. Since the nature of God is absolute good, and everything is God-Substance, there can be no evil in reality. * Scriptural ref.; Psalm 139: 7-8

  • The Divinity of Man
Who and what man is and his relationship to God Man is made in the image-likeness of God.

  • Spiritual Man
"And God said, Let us make man in our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Genesis 1:26

  • The Value and Power of Thinking
The value and power of thought.
It is through thinking that man forms that which he has in his life. * Scriptural ref.; Proverbs 23:7
  • Practicing the Presence
Living in the presence of God.

  • Prayer
    Communication with God.

  • Meditation
Conscious thought on aspects of God. * Scriptural ref.; Philippians 4:8

  • The Law of Demonstration
The results which follows from practice of the above principles.

  • The Law of Mind Action
    Like begets like.

    UNITY Peace Statement
Unity stands for peace in the presence of conflict; for love in the presence of hatred; for forgiveness in the presence of injury.  Unity honors the many names for God, the many paths to God, the many ways to worship God; for there is only one power and presence of God and that God loves each one of us equally.  And so we urge all nations, their leaders, and their people to turn to God by whatever name for guidance during these challenging times and pursue peace, not war, for this is what honors the God of all our faith traditions. Unity stands for peace in our lifetime.
